Thomas L. Mitchell, Jr. is a seasoned professional with a distinguished career spanning over three decades in facility management (FM). Committed to advancing organizational performance through effective workforce and workplace management, he has held leadership positions in government, private, and non-profit sectors.
With over 30 years of experience in facility management (FM), Thomas L. Mitchell, Jr. is a recognized leader in the industry, with a commitment to advancing organizational performance through the optimization of the workforce and workplace. A retired Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force and currently serving as a Colonel in the Texas State Guard, Thomas combines his military discipline with deep expertise in FM to help organizations achieve sustainability, operational efficiency, and long-term success.
A Certified Facility Manager since 2000 and an IFMA Fellow inducted in 2013, Thomas has a distinguished career spanning government, private, and non-profit sectors. He has served in key leadership roles, including Chairman of the IFMA Global Board of Directors (2009-2010) and Director of the National Institute of Building Sciences (2011-2018). His global influence extends to his contributions as an adjunct professor at The University of Texas at San Antonio and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, where he chairs the Facilities Management Academic Program Advisory Council.
Thomas is also dedicated to the advancement of FM knowledge and advocacy, sharing his expertise through published articles, presentations, and interviews across multiple platforms. His leadership and guidance have been instrumental in shaping FM practices worldwide, including his contributions to FM development in Africa.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Thomas has been recognized with numerous honors, including the 2018 SAME Appreciation Award, the National Institute of Building Sciences Award of Appreciation, and the Black Engineer of the Year Award (Career Achievement nominee).
Currently, Thomas serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Operations Officer at FM3IS Associates, L.L.C., where he continues to lead, mentor, and inspire the next generation of facility management professionals. His dedication to both his profession and community is further exemplified by his volunteer work as a minister and teacher at Covenant Community Church and his lifelong commitment to veterans and disaster relief efforts.
